The impact of respiratory disease in New Zealand: 2014 update
Chronic and serious respiratory illnesses continue to make a substantial contribution to New Zealand’s health burden. Respiratory diagnoses account for 1 in 8 of all overnight hospitalisations in New Zealand. This report covers six respiratory disease indicators: asthma, bronchiectasis, childhood bronchiolitis and pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and total respiratory disease. We report incidence, prevalence, risks and determinants, using the most recent available data from the New Zealand Health Survey, and pharmaceutical prescriptions, hospitalisations and mortality datasets, over the period 2000-‐2013.
