New Zealand has a long history of internationally recognised research in the field of respiratory medicine, asthma in particular. This research has led to improvements in the assessment and management of asthma, which have resulted in marked reductions in mortality and morbidity from asthma and a better understanding of its causes. The example of the development and implementation of the guided asthma self-management plan system of care is presented, including the most recent advances. The research priorities in the National Respiratory Strategy is also be presented.
