Dance4Asthma is a fun and energetic event that started in 2012 to raise awareness of asthma in schools. Now in the fifth year, we hope you will help us make the 2016 competition bigger and better than ever! In term 2, we're encouraging all schools to put together a dance video to the 2016 Dance4Asthma song and post it on YouTube. This year, Kiwi artist Lorde has generously donated her song 'Team' to the campaign! Check it out here.
Dancing is a fun and creative way to raise awareness that also keeps you active and fit. Dancing is also a great way to bring people together by grabbing your friends and making up your own dance routine, whether it's hip hop or ballet! The video can involve one class or the whole school, and is open to preschool, primary schools, intermediates and secondary schools. If you're keen to get involved, talk to the teachers at your school and ask your friends and classmates to join in.
In New Zealand, 1 in 7 kids takes medication for asthma, and 550,000 school days are lost each year due to their condition. Research shows that entering school with asthma can result in low reading achievement and can be quite debilitating to some children - you may even have children in your class who face these challenges every day. We want all kids to be confident, healthy and participating fully at school. Dance4Asthma raises the profile of asthma to children and your community in a fun and positive way.
Dance4Asthma runs through Term 2, with entries open from 2 May and will close on 24 June 2016. Each of the winning schools will receive a $1000 cash prize. Whether your school needs new books, supplies, technology or sporting equipment we hope this prize will make a positive impact on your students.
