Breathe Better STEPtember
North Otago Asthma Society facilitate a weekly Respiratory Exercise Programme, this is a supportive environment for people who live with respiratory conditions to maintain a regular exercise routine.  Regular exercise has been shown to provide great health benefits allowing the body to use oxygen better, strengthens breathing muscles as well as other muscles.

So for the inaugural national Breath Better September campaign – our group will be stepping outside and pounding the pavement each Thursday (1 September, 7 September, 15 September, 22 September, 29 September).  Our goal is to “Breath Better” and raise awareness and funds to allow the North Otago Asthma Society to continue to provide services in our community.

Rangitāne o Tamaki nui a Rua

Melissa is an asthma educator in Dannevirke, and will be doing asthma/respiratory promotion throughout the entire community at schools, pharmacies and her work place Rangitāne o Tamaki nui a Rua. The schools will be fundraising by having a mufti day for a gold coin donation, and encouraging everyone to wear blue. Melissa says, “We will be using balloons as a way of engaging with the kids”, and there will also be competitions to blow up a balloon with one breath. “Events and activities will take place from one end of the town to the other end, and we want to get everyone involved.” While raising awareness, Melissa will also be educating and talking about asthma, and talking about how people can support their friends with asthma.
