The Asthma Foundation recommends spirometry testing for everyone over 35 years who smokes or who used to smoke.
Spirometry is the most basic objective measure of lung function. The results give an indication of whether air-flow and lung volume are appropriate for a patient's ages, sex, and height.
Spirometry can indicate whether there is signficant air-flow obstruction (e.g. asthma or emphysema) or a signficant reduction in lung volume (e.g. suggestive of a restrictive lung disease.)
Spirometry for health professionals
Spirometry is the most commonly used respiratory function test for assessing respiratory disease worldwide. The principles of spirometry are relatively simple and testing should produce good quality data provided the points raised in this sheet are taken into account.
