Child Asthma Plan

Self Management Plans are important

Everyone with asthma should have a written Self Management Plan to know what to do when their asthma symptoms change. A Self Management Plan can also help people with asthma and their families know what to do an emergency.

The plan is not a rigid protocol for asthma management. However, there is a stepwise approach to its development.

Major differences between the adult and child plans

There are two basic differences between an adult Self Management Plan and the Child Asthma Plan. They are:

1. Peak Flow Meters Children who are over 6 years of age can usually use a peak flow meter to monitor their PEFR. However, when they are unwell with asthma this may not be possible.

2. Wide range of delivery systems for children. A child may have one device for relief during mild attacks (dry powder) and another device for more severe attacks (MDI and spacer)).
