The purpose of the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ Child Asthma Guidelines is to provide simple, practical and evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis, assessment and management of asthma in children (aged 11 and under) in a quick reference format.
Warning note - Montelukast
Montelukast may be associated with behaviour change and sleep disturbance in children. In adolescents, there is a risk of suicidal ideation and self harm. Montelukast should be used with caution under 18y and carers advised to stop the medication if there are concerns.
These guidelines are designed to aid health professionals in delivering asthma care in the community and in emergency departments, providing simple, practical and evidence-based guidance.
