Our services are available to the whole community. Nelson Asthma Society is a non-profit organization offering a free service to anyone with asthma or other respiratory conditions such as COPD/CORD or emphysema for example.

We cover the Nelson and Tasman area including Golden Bay and Murchison.

Opening hours

Tuesday to Thursday 10am to 2pm. Often Hilary is in the office after 2pm and a telephone message service is also available.

Nelson Bays Primary Health respiratory nurse educators, Jean Weary and Shelley Ford are based at 20 New Street, Nelson. Their contact details are:

Together we offer the following:

Our free service:

  • Education, information and support to individuals and their families
  • Home visits for ‘one to one’ education on asthma management (or if preferred, consultation held elsewhere)
  • Assessment of your asthma and inhaler techniques
  • Lung function testing (spirometry)
  • Management of, and advice given, on self management – teaching you to keep control of your asthma
  • Advice given freely over telephone, answering your questions and resolving your fears
  • Referral to other agencies, if required
  • Pamphlets/booklets and information sheets covering asthma – triggers, puffers and devices, peak flows, COPD, allergies, nebulisers, etc

Membership benefits

Membership fee – $10 per annum (Financial year April to March).

Support and Light Exercise Groups:

Nelson twice/month and Motueka once/month. Please ring Hilary for further details on 546 7675.

Hydrotherapy Pool Session:

Nelson: Hospital 3rd Wednesdays/month 1pm to 2pm. 

Plus:

·         Nebuliser hire long and short term, at a nominal cost (GP referral necessary)

 

·         Nebuliser accessories for sale: bowls, tubing, mouth pieces etc Dust Mite Bedding Covers for sale at discounted prices

 

·         Quarterly newsletters

Other services to be delivered by Nelson Asthma Society

·         Promoting respiratory disease management and increasing community awareness of support and education for people with asthma and related conditions.

·         In conjunction with NBPH, develop and deliver health promotion tool-kits to community and providers.
·       Facilitation of Asthma Fundamentals course for workforce development.
·         Advisory role to NBPH Board on service provision and intervention for clients.

We are affiliated to the Asthma Foundation. The Asthma Foundation offers national support, provides excellent medical advice from recognised and respected specialists, and continues to lobby for asthma to be accorded appropriate recognition as a Government health priority.
