Dr Helen Snell, Nurse Practitioner, Chair Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee of NZ (NPAC-NZ), Project Leader Health Workforce NZ Diabetes Nurse Prescribing Project 2011, Marina Lambert NP Respiratory and Victoria Perry, Nurse Practitioner, Respiratory have offered to present this exciting development in a special lunch time meeting for all who are interested. These are exciting times for specialist health professionals.
The Medicines Act has recently been amended to enable Register Nurses to prescribe in diabetes. The Minister of Health has signaled that further amendments are following to allow “other health professionals” to prescribe.
A brief presentation and discussion will be held regarding the diabetes nurse prescribing project to date including the background work which needs to occur in partnership with our medical colleagues once the regulatory changes are made and the Nursing Council of NZ determines the process.Following this we will discuss “where to from here” for Respiratory Nurses."
"Influenza vaccination – time to step up." Why are the rates of influenza immunisation among health care workers in New Zealand and internationally so low? Professor Richard Beasley will discuss the rationale and evidence for patient protection through the immunisation of health care workers. He will also cover barriers to uptake, interventions to reduce them and the controversial suggestion to make influenza immunisation compulsory for health care workers.

Dr Phillip Bardin (Monash University, Melbourne) – voice box asthma and immune suppression in asthma.
